The collection contains personal correspondence principally between Charles Kellogg Ober and his fiancee, Julia M. Dodge. Ober's letters include descriptions of his student activities at Williams College with references to religious matters, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and association with the Young Men's Christian Association. His post-graduate correspondence chronicles his career with the Y.M.C.A. which took him throughout the United States. Julia's letters to Ober contain information about schoolmates, mutual acquaintances, family members and personal matters. Miscellaneous correspondence includes letters from family members, personal friends and business associates.

Charles Kellogg Ober was born May 5, 1856 in Beverly, Mass., and attended Williams College (1879-1883). He developed an early interest in the Young Men's Christian Association which led to his appointment as assistant to Robert R. McBurney, Secretary of the Y.M.C.A. of the City of New York, in 1882. Ober married Julia Dodge in 1883, and served as State Secretary of the Massachusetts Y.M.C.A. from 1883 to 1884.
